Firstly, men are swimming in testosterone, which makes them much more aggressive than women. Agression, to my way of thinking, is the antithesis of empathy. So women are bound to be more sensitive just on that one factor alone. But even more important is that female animals, including human women, have to be very sensitive to the needs of their offspring. Except for a few exceptions, which prove the rule, it is females that rear young. Empathy for your young has GOT to be adaptive. Being sensitive to the needs of your youngster(s) probably guarantees a better chance at survival, so this would select females with hightened empathy. Seems to me empathy for young probably generalizes to empathy at large, just the way aggression is generalized in male behavior. What do you think?
