But you should remember that Cree does not "own" SiC. Anybody can make it.

i agree...you cannot patent a crystal not even SiC. you can patent a process for making crystals.

what cree does own is a patented process for making high quality SiC crystals. anyone who wants to make SiC has to work around the IP. then they have to invent uses for SiC that cree has not already patented.
