Abbott Labs Norvir Studies 'Show Promise' Against HIV

ABBOTT PARK, Ill. -- Abbott Laboratories (ABT) said data from three studies of its Norvir
therapy, in combination with several other protease inhibitors, "show promise" against the HIV virus.

In a press release Thursday, Abbott said it evaluated three regimens: the ongoing effect of Norvir and
saquinavir after about three years of therapy; the addition of Norvir to indinavir regimens for patients
with detectable viral levels; and the use of Norvir in combination with nelfinavir in treating infants and
children with HIV.

Abbott Laboratories said data from clinical research on the Norvir/saquinavir combination show
sustained viral suppression after 144 weeks.

Overall, 85%, or 120 of 141, of patients achieved undetectable HIV RNA levels (less than 200
copies/mL) at some point during the three years of therapy on Norvir/saquinavir (400 mg/400 mg
twice daily) with or without intensification with nucleoside analogues, Abbott said.

A second study investigated the effects of adding Norvir to indinavir regimens in patients with
detectable HIV RNA levels. According to Abbott, "statistically significant" improvements in viral load
and CD4 cell counts were observed after three weeks of Norvir/indinavir combination therapy.
