closing at or near the high is necessary and a large influx of buying during the afternoon helps...there's no prescription. good news after the close and before the next open can trigger a gapper.

you can look at volume on a daily chart...try yahoo stock quotes and click your way to a 1 day (big) chart. the volume is at the bottom.

also, by definition there is no volume during non-trading hours. some NASDAQ stocks trade during the "late session." BB stocks do not.
