Hmmm... Think of all those species in which Mom munches on the babies if they don't stay out of her way at the right time.

Females (of most species) are indeed biologically programmed to care for their young until the young can care for themselves (and usually that doesn't take very long). During this period they are protective of the litter. But I don't think we should confuse protectiveness with empathy--they're two entirely different things.
