So far, Cree's SiC based Blue LED's are no better nor cheaper than the competition's. I believe SiC is a superior material to build blue LED's on, but Cree must provide it in larger than 2 or 3 inch boules to be price competitive.

presently cree's bright blue's sell for about 1/2 the cost of sapphire based. they are smaller (better for handhelds). they are much easier to design with because of the connections.

cree recently demonstrated a 4" crystal and said 10-12" are quite possible.
