William, StressGen went up 24% today on a million shares volume in response to the IPO of rival Antigenics (AGEN).

Other risks include competition from rivals, including StressGen Biotechnologies Corp. (Toronto:SSB.TO - news), a Canadian company that is working on its own treatments using heat shock proteins. The two companies are also involved in a patent dispute, a big stumbling block for small, unprofitable biotechs, analysts said.

Some months ago, I spoke to StressGen IR about patents and they were not concerned about Antigenics, saying their claims were on autologous use of stress proteins.

More recently StressGen IR responded to a question of mine as follows:
Patents are a very complex area and I could not and cannot disclose all the issues around intellectual property concerning StressGen. All I can say is that we continue to make explicit public statements that we believe that we have the earliest priority dates for patents in this area, we do not believe we will need licenses to commercialize our technology (apart from those we already have like MIT's). I also remind you that StressGen has a granted patent in Europe which Antigenics is challenging because of its early priority date and broad scope. Typically, patents are filed worldwide but can be granted many years apart.
