I now have the miracle answer. It really works! Line a dish (preferably glass or plastic, not aluminum) with aluminum foil. Put the silver in it. Put in a generous amount of baking soda, a few tablespoons is usually plenty depending on the amount of tarnish. Pour in boiling water to cover. Voila! There is a kit that does this that they charge lots of money for, it's basically an aluminum plate and baking soda, but you have to clean the aluminum plate. My way is better, just throw away the foil when you're done. Some chemist can explain why it works. I don't care why. I just care that it does. We haven't touched silver polish since we learned this, and our silverware is always sparkling.
