Nortel Networks Brings Wireless Internet to Office, Adds IP to GSM In-Building Solution

CANNES, France, Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ - GSM operators will soon be able to offer corporate customers access to the company intranet as well as the Internet from a single, mobile device with an innovative, IP (Internet Protocol)-based wireless office solution from Nortel Networks (NYSE/TSE: NT).

Announced today at the GSM World Congress, Nortel Networks has added IP (Internet Protocol) capability to the Nortel Networks PicoNode in-building solution for GSM service. This includes a full IP layer, supporting local area network (LAN) connectivity for packetized voice and data traffic.

Adding IP to the Nortel Networks PicoNode offers corporations a highly cost-effective way to adapt to the Internet business model,' says Phil Terrett, director, product marketing, Nortel Networks. ''The new IP layer will enable employees to use their GSM phones, or in the future any wireless devices, to connect to the GSM network, intranet or Internet, wherever they happen to be. Considering the immense number of applications which will come onto the market in the near future, this will offer a wealth of high-value services for corporate users.'

Nortel Networks and France Telecom Mobiles are demonstrating the Nortel Networks PicoNode -- including features like SMS (Short Message Service), Intelligent Call Routing, integrated PBX functionality, multi-site LAN connectivity and IP -- at the GSM World Congress. France Telecom Mobiles offers corporate mobile service over its Itineris GSM network using the Nortel Networks PicoNode in-building solution.

The Nortel Networks PicoNode incorporates a base transceiver station, a base station controller and a mobile switching center into a single cabinet slightly larger than a personal computer. It provides GSM call switching, near landline-quality voice service and integrated PBX features in a compact package suitable for corporate environments. The PicoNode can switch traffic locally when deployed in a private network, reducing traffic on the public GSM network, and resulting in substantial cost savings and superior call quality.
