I don't think a takeover of GLW is likely. A merger with another component maker like SDLI is possible or a takeover of a company like ORTEL.

However, to being bought out by a LU, CSCO or NT is highly unlikely. The reason is that if for example LU were to buy GLW, they would be cutting themselves out of future contracts. Certainly, competitors of LU would not want to buy LU components if alternatives are available. Only is a severe capacity contraint (or much better technology) situation would they still buy. None of these telecom equipment companies prefer to buy from each other if they have a good alternative. One gets the idea that only a merger among the components makers is likely. NT would not want to focus on the components but instead focus on new technology companies as takeover targets.

Kevin Kalkhoven CEO of JDS Uniphase makes it clear that they have no intention of competing against their customers like LU and NT, the "systems" companies.

For that reason, i don't believe LU or NT will buy out GLW as it would put a limit on GLW's ability to increase sales in this area.

Here is link to a JDSU Merrill Lynch virtual conference. It has audio with a slide show. Very informative. It is a few months old before GLW made its push into the components business.
