GLW deserves our attention, not just as another photonic play but also as mounting competition for JDSU. A recent WSJ article (2/3/00;pg B4--sorry, no link, a pay site) describes Corning's intention "to move directly into optical components." In addition:

"By moving into lasers, Corning is directly challenging powerful component makers such as JDS Uniphase Corp, San Jose, CA, which has a much more-focused components business, as well as Lucent, which is a big Corning customer. Corning is investing heavily in research and development to improve Lasertron's technology (now owned by GLW) and will have to continue pouring money into the fast-changing field to stay abreast of changes that are certain to sweep the field."

Of course, the burning question is: How much will deep-pockets Corning compete with JDSU in the active component area of photonics?

Any informed opinions?
