NW-- Agreed -- we know CPQ is not just a boxmaker any longer but the PERCEPTION of WS is CPQ is a boxmaker and that will be difficult to change and will take time. WS is in a 'show me' mode and it must be well proven before the perception will change.
I also agree CPQs model is much better than that of DELL and it will change even more. I look for the retailers (# years) to be like a catalog shop of years ago,,, people will look at them there and TOUCH them before putting the order in, few will be on the shelves. Many of those ordered by phone or on the net will be picked up at the retailer and the retailer will take care of warranty and service work. If you look at the Feb issue of PC COMPUTING or listen to Ed Kirshner the message is "the distributor is dead unless they have something of value to add".
I really could care less where all the real and perceived boxmakers are. I have made money on HWP, MUEI, & DELL why CPQ languishes. Currently waiting on MUEI to drop a little, DELL to go up a little more -- and just watching HWP from the sidelines. I am not here for the "technology" or any reason but to make a buck... I keep up on the technology only to be info used when making purchases for myself or my company!
