Let me try to add some perspective to how IBM has given away the high-end storage market.

In 1990 I had a look inside IBM's AS400 9336 DASD. Inside was an Emulex controller. Later I had a peek inside their RAMAC and found another third party controller inside. Later, in an act of desperation to compete with EMC they signed an OEM (reseller?) agreement with STK. My point is that while EMC was developing a world class engineering organization committed to developing high-end storage, IBM was concentrating on computers and trying to buy low-end storage devices outside. The same holds true for HP, Sun and Compaq.

Now EMC is the leader in high-end storage and is leading the way in defining storage architectures and features. IBM, HP, Sun and Compaq are only just beginning to take storage seriously by developing the internal expertise that is required to compete with EMC. They are still years behind.
