I have nothing to add to the amount of conjecture out there, but I do have a considered opinion developed over the years of watching the deregulation of telecom in North America that I am not prepared to discuss in detail. I will point out, however, that the odds continue to strongly favor the evolution of the symbiotic relationship between top tier manufacturers/technology providers -- a slowly expanding group that may eventually resemble the G8 -- and broadband service providers -- supercarriers and ordinary carriers -- along the tiered outlines forming within the pragmatic framework, provided by word and by deed, by the likes of Lucent (ATT), Nortel (Bell Canada), Cisco and the lesser known Telcordia (RBOCs' emulation of Lucent).
