OT: banning Napster/MP3 Buying MPPP CDs
Excerpts from the 2/3/00 Northern Star.
- University of Illinois and Northwestern Illinois University have banned Napster.com from their servers.
- Napster is a site that allows users to freely share MP3 files.
- NWIU banned it due Napster taking up 20% of the networks capacity.
- UofI did it for the same reason plus it was illegal in that students were involved in copyright violations by sending MP3 files that they didn't pay for.
- Northern Illinois University prohibits an MP3 server on its system.
- NIU would eliminate the napster site if RIAA became involved per NIU director of academic computing services.

20% of the server space! This is showing the demand of the technology. The kids are pushing it. MP3 files can eat up some hard drive space so I see why the universities are having problems.

I see MPPP has got myMP3.com up. Wonder how much use it is getting.

I decided to spend some time reviewing songs on the site. I bought 2 CD in 90 minutes. What's odd is that the checkout button is hard to find on the home page. I can see many people just giving up and not buying anything. It's under "store" when I was looking for "shopping cart" or "checkout". Shipping cost $3.49. The two CDs were ~$6 each.

Some artists don't have a CD available for purchase, only an MP3 download. Too bad, I would have bought a couple more.

I found the on-fire rating much better than the rankings. No synth-pop category. They have gorerock through I can't imagine what that is.

25,600 CD sold in January. will be interesting to track this figure as the site develops.
