Ten,

it seems that pipelines can get too long. I think even Itanium's 10-stage pipeline was considered a little longer than it needs to be by some people.

In the x86 market, MHz is the principle determiner of price. The only way to get to very high MHz is through a very deep pipeline. There is no other way!

My hat is off to Intel's management for accepting this concept. Cyrix never figured it out and AMD did not go far enough with K7.
