Ten, could the same be said about Dell that is being said about Gateway? Seems that at least for servers, Dell is committed to Intel's "cookie-cutter" server strategy. That means they're relying on Intel to do the R&D, thereby undercutting Compaq with their massive R&D into servers. Or is Dell actually putting some effort into research, development, and engineering, more so than Gateway?
Alas, Dell doesn't do any more R&D than Gateway. Dell at least is in the storage business as well as PCs and servers, but they just OEM those along. Wait, they did buy a storage company out here, Convergenet I think. Maybe that'll help. But you have to wonder how companies with no IP, no R&D can survive. maybe Dell's IP is their web distribution methodology, but that should be copy-able. New standard to run your investments by: do they have IP?
