Ascend Commun Dn 5%; Worry About New Pdt Delay Cited

By Mark Boslet

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Ascend Communications Inc.'s (ASND) shares came under pressure as worries spread about a possible delay in its new ''TNT'' product.

But a company spokeswoman called the worries unfounded, saying the new and still only vaguely described product remains ''on track'' for a third-quarter release.

Ascend shares fell more than 4.5% as the rumor of the delay gripped the marketplace. Some investors were convinced TNT, which stands for ''The Next Thing,'' would come out as late as October, market sources said.

The company spokeswoman disputed the October date. And Robertson Stephens & Co. analyst Paul Johnson said he, too, had a ''high degree of confidence'' that TNT would ship on time.

Industry sources say TNT is a high-end remote access device that will enable computers to link from branch offices to corporate networks or to the Internet. It is expected to be released as early as mid-July.

Ascend shares were off 2 7/8 at 60 3/8 on Nasdaq volume of 2.2 million. Average daily volume is 1.8 million. The shares were as low as 59 3/4 intraday.
