FWIW- I read an informative article on Fuel Cells this weekend. Very good summary of them. November 99' issue of Mother Earth News. Titled "The Miracle of Fuel Cells"

Some interesting points:

All fuel cells require Platinum in them. They also all run on Hydrogen.

-The only currently feasible method of obtaining Hydrogen is reforming it from Nat. Gas, propane, or other fossil fuels. Methane can also be used, but supply/distribution channels are not there.

-The efficiencies of fuel cells are about 40% right now, comparable to gas turbine generators. Once the wasted heat in a fuel cell can be captured- Efficiencies should approach 80-90%.

-The electric utilities are already onto these. Many have made investments in them, and signed distribution agreements with fuel cell manufacturers.

Very interesting field. It may just pull another "internut" like parabolic rise, when the herd gets the picture of the promising future.
