I have a fairly loaded system that I want to add a second NIC to. I'm on an Abit BXR2 board and W98.

Here's the current irq list:

0 System timer
1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural Keyboard
2 Programmable interrupt controller
3 Communications Port (COM2)
4 Communications Port (COM1)
5 Vortex AU8830 PCI Audio
5 Vortex AU8830 Multifunction PCI Platform
5 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
6 Standard Floppy Disk Controller
7 Printer Port (LPT1)
8 System CMOS/real time clock
9 (free)
10 SupraExpress 56i Sp Modem PnP
11 D-Link DFE-530TX PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter
11 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
11 3dfx Voodoo3
11 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
11 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
12 PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port
13 Numeric data processor
14 Primary IDE controller (dual fifo)
14 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
15 Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)
15 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller

The slots are as follows:

AGP: voodoo3
PCI1: slot fan blocks
PCI2: open for 2nd nic
PCI3: sound card
PCI4: 1st nic (dlink dfe-530tx to cable modem)
PCI5: open (could use for 2nd nic)
ISA1: Open
ISA2: Modem

LPT1: Printer and sandisk reader
USB: In use (scanner, webcam, ff steering wheel)
Com1: Palm pilot connection + firecracker
Com2: open

I'm willing to sacrifice a com port, I want to do a bunch of X-10 stuff, but I can run that off of another computer.

I've tried adding the second nic and it always ends up sharing the irq with the other nic and then it doesn't work (switch says that it detects the 100 connection <glows amber> and the green light's on on the nic but nothing in network neighborhood).

I'm thinking that I have two options. The first is forcing irq's in the bios. The second is that the Dlink has some sort of driver where you can specify the irq (but I'm worried cause I will have 2 dlinks in the system).

What's the procedure for forcing IRQ's in the bios - is it all or none? Can I force the two nics to specific irq's and let PNP sort out the rest?

I also have an USB/NIC hub that I could try. I don't think that the bandwidth from the cable mdem even stresses the 10 of my 10/100 cards and I could hook it up to the USB->ethernet hub and use the nic for my network. Any ideas on that option?

thanks,

Michael
