"It's going to take longer then most here believe"

I think the exact opposite is true. It is going to take less time than most here believe. The bits of evidence are everywhere that 1XRTT deployment is coming to a CDMA system near you soon. It starts with PrimeCo, followed closely by BAM/Airtouch/GTE. Sprint PCS does the same, just to stay competitive. They start new buildouts with 1XRTT, while VodaBAM is upgrading like crazy in a mad rush to higher data speeds. Their one rate plan coupled with awesome nationwide coverage and CDMA quality draws subs like moths to a flame. Huge demands on capacity accelerate the need for 1XRTT's capacity-doubling abilities. Handset vendors scramble to deliver 1XRTT models. It's a snowball. Note I haven't even mentioned the home wireless data sub yet. He comes later, after the buildout further accelerates.

When does this happen? It's happening. Lucent will be installing 1XRTT equipment mid year here in the US is my bet. Handset vendors MUST be working on 1XRTT models NOW. That has profound implications for Q's ASIC business. They have said the MSM5000 is sampling NOW. They also stated that they are supplying CSMs to ALL 1XRTT infrastructure suppliers. Will any sane handset maker use any other ASIC than the MSM5000? Will any operator offer models that are NOT 1XRTT ready? Why should they? It all seems so clear to me.

So, you say trend till third quarter. I say much news to come long before that. Stay tuned!
