Janice, I once read and observed a study about the relationship of mothers to infants. It was very fascinating. The one thing they discovered was that if you gave a mother a baby and told her this was a girl, they held it much more gently and nuturingly than if it was a boy.
I noticed this same behavior in myself with our two children. Another point the study showed is fathers tended to play much rougher with boys than with girls during their toddler stage.

This could be some built in mechanism to ensure that the male is strong and ready to overcome battles and kill for food. Maybe helping to ensure the survivability of the species.

The study also went on to show this same aggressive behavior in boys tended to force young girls into not participating in class at an early age. Boys being more aggressive and raising their hands quicker.
Teachers were secretly monitored and on average selected the boys to answer questions something like 80% of the time vs girls when they had an equal amount of gender in the class.

About empathy?? I think it just depends on how you define it.
