Investing Philosophy

I've got an academic question I kept forgetting to post over the weekend. Considering that many people in the thread didn't want to invest in a stock with less than a $10 billion market cap for some very reasoned explanations, why is it that an exception seems to being made for CREE with its $3 - $4 billion market cap? Does the relative assuredness of the company's competitive advantage give us reason to make an exception? Is it the perception of a massive growth opportunity that makes it worthy of an exception?

Don't think for a nanosecond that I'm being critical of those who are changing their minds about the importance of the market cap. I'm not. Just curious.
