[ISDN]
<<<They are looking at options you can put your hands on, right now. If a company wants to let employees telecommute today and wants better performance than a conventional modem, ISDN is about all they realistically have available.>>>
Steve --
I know you're right and I also know I tend to over-react when journalists make blanket statements such as "xDSL won't be around for two or three years. . ." or whatever he said. There are many technical folks out there who don't even know about ADSL, seriously, I've talked to them. There are also entrepeneurs who want high-speed connections NOW, and whatever their ISPs wil give them, they'll take. I talked to the owner of a local cyber cafe, C@fe Cybernet in LaJolla, and he told me all about the ATM solution he was getting in the near future. I asked him what specifically would be used to connect to the ATM backbone and he treated me as though I didn't know what I was talking about, so I gave up. Since PacBell has announced they'll be doing ADSL trials in San Diego, it's conceivable he could be getting that. Hard to say. At any rate his video conferencing images were coming across at 4 to 5 frames a second and I mentioned Amati was demonstrating 25 frames per second and, again, he thought I was smoking something.
You'd be impressed with how polite I am. :)
But, you're right, give us a couple years. . .
I just want to be alive to see it.
Cheers!
