Newbridge Networks Provides High Performance Networking Solution for U.S. Defense Agencies Stationed in Korea
Networking Solution Supports Agencies' Mission Critical Communications
HERNDON, Virginia, January 5, 1999 -- Newbridge Networks (NYSE: NN; TSE: NNC) today announced that it is providing a high performance networking solution to support the mission critical communications requirements of the U.S. Defense Department's agencies stationed in the Republic of Korea (ROK). These agencies, which include the Air Force, Army, Navy and Marines, protect the demilitarized zone separating North and South Korea. The high capacity asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network backbone provided by Newbridge will help the Defense Department realize its goal of bringing centralized network and service management capabilities across one virtual wide area network (WAN).
The network will span 24 locations throughout South Korea, supporting next-generation services and applications, including: high-resolution imaging for intelligence, maneuver control and medical applications, including secure and non-secure voice; Internet Protocol (IP); encrypted data; and broadcast quality video. It also supports the Armed Forces Korean Network's television and radio stations, which provides quality programming for military personnel and their families.
The flexible, highly scalable Newbridge solution is comprised of the industry-leading Siemens / Newbridge MainStreetXpress 36170 MultiServices Switch, the MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager and the MainStreetXpress 36150 Access Switch -- a high-capacity, multi-services platform designed to support native cell relay, broadcast quality video and IP services.
The MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager is a cost-effective, highly scalable networking solution that is capable of centrally monitoring and managing multiple-traffic networks, providing network partitioning -- a feature that sets it apart from other vendor offerings. It can support and manage more than 250,000 service connections simultaneously, and its high scalability allows more than 120 operators located throughout the world to monitor the network at the same time.
"The goal of the Defense Department was to design a network with unmatched performance and reliability," said Giulio Gianturco, Executive Vice President and General Manager for North and South America, Newbridge Networks. "We believe the solution we have developed will serve as a model for other military organizations that look to the U.S. Department of Defense for procurement leadership."
Newbridge Networks designs, manufactures, markets and services networking solutions to organizations in more than 100 countries. The Company leverages its relationship with a growing family of Newbridge Affiliate companies and strategic alliances with Siemens and 3Com Corporation to deliver seamless, end-to-end solutions. QUANTICO, VA, SAN DIEGO, CA, December 6, 1999 -- Newbridge Networks (NYSE: NN; TSE: NNC) today announced that the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps are conducting lab testing of the TimeStep secure VPN (virtual private network) solution from Newbridge Networks. In addition, the Marine Corps has selected and is procuring the TimeStep solution for its standard enterprise VPN network of over 120,000 users. The solution is being deployed at major U.S. Marine Corps bases throughout the world.
"Based on a detailed lab evaluation and successful beta deployment at six bases, the Marine Corps has selected and procured the TimeStep solution from Newbridge Networks for its standard enterprise VPN for both garrison and deployed tactical networks," said Captain Carl Wright, U.S. Marine Corps. "This technology will play an integral role in securing SBU communications in combat situations."
"This is a further significant milestone for Newbridge Networks in the key government industry vertical market. We are confident that this is another in a series of successful steps between Newbridge and the U.S. Department of Defense," said Tim Hember, vice president, VPN, Newbridge Networks.
The U.S. Navy has evaluated several VPN products within its test lab at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) Systems Center in San Diego, including the TimeStep solution from Newbridge Networks. A key factor in the testing was the evaluation of the capability to incorporate the Defense Department's Public Key Infrastructure (DOD PKI) - a critical element in authenticating DOD users - into the TimeStep VPN solution. This means that DOD Intranet users from all branches of the military, including the Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Army, can be authenticated using digital certificates.
"There is significant progress being made here on the path towards incorporating DOD PKI capabilities into its products," said Captain Dan Galik, U.S. Navy. "The U.S. Defense Departments require strict adherence to industry standards, such as FIPS 140-1, and IPSec, hence our support for these types of solutions."
The Navy has developed an innovative security solution that uses secure VPNs in an architecture that provides a VPN gateway alongside the firewall. Together, the TimeStep solution from Newbridge Networks, with the DOD PKI, enables applications that include secure remote access and tele-maintenance. This allows the Navy's ships at sea to securely reach technical experts at major shore commands and provide specialized assistance.
