Visto Receives Key Patents for Broadbased Web Synchronization; Key Part
RELATED SYMBOLS: (CPQ)(USW)(NETA)(CMGI)(MCAF)(HWP)(GE)(T)
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Feb 7, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Visto Corporation said today it has received two patents covering various aspects of synchronization of email and information over the Internet.
The patents cover synchronization of email over the Internet and generic synchronization of various other "workplace elements" such as files, address books, calendars, etc. In addition to current applications that use these capabilities, increasing numbers of telecommunications and wireless applications will also be able to take advantage of them.
The technologies which have been patented were developed by Visto early in the company's history and are key components of its webtop communications service, Visto.com, which makes email, calendar, file storage (photos, music), and groups, accessible from any computer or hand-held device with an Internet connection, and automatically synchronizes data between devices. The company filed for the patents in 1997.
"Synchronization of all aspects of a computer and web user's life is becoming increasingly important as many of us begin to rely on multiple intelligent devices to communicate and organize our lives," said Doug Brackbill, Visto's president and CEO. "We are very proud to hold such a broad-based patent portfolio in this key area.
"At the founding of the company, we began to develop this substantial technology foundation which is at the core of our vision of the relationship of the web to users' lives (this is hard to understand). Our early technology investments are now paying off."
Brackbill explained that synchronization of email over the Internet will grow in importance, especially as wireless Internet access becomes widely available. When a user creates email on multiple devices (such as a palmtop, a cell phone, a computer, or others), it is very important to collect and synchronize all of the email and mailboxes from these devices in order to keep organized and coordinated.
Visto's patent covers this area and will become increasingly important as telecommunications providers offer email on more and more wireless devices.
According to Daniel Mendez, Visto's chief technology officer, "These patents underscore Visto's commitment, from the company's inception, to develop a deep technology foundation to carry our vision for the long term. Since our founding, the Internet has evolved from being at the periphery of lives to a key focal point of many users lives. This technology can support that continuing evolution."
Mendez explained that Visto was able to make such significant breakthroughs by integrating sophisticated synchronization and conflict resolution capabilities with Internet technologies such as HTTP tunneling, SSL and scheduled Internet connectivity.
The resulting Internet synchronization application, the Visto Assistant, hides this complexity in an easy to use package with intelligent installation and support for all widely used email protocols (e.g., POP3 for internet email, MAPI for Microsoft Exchange and Outlook and VIM for Lotus Notes and CC:Mail).
