Michael--

The studies you mention are indeed interesting. What their results say to me is--once again--that we're socialized to treat little boys and little girls differently. Certainly this is indisputably the case with the teachers who selected the boys to answer questions more often than the girls. The teacher has made a conscious (and deplorable) choice: let the boys answer, they're supposed to be the leaders.

Though to tell you the truth, I don't recall this happening when I was in the lower grades (junior high and high school, yes, however). My own memory is that it was the girls who, being more verbal than the boys, were more eager to answer, and who did get called on. These recollections are not, I suppose, especially reliable--it was quite a while ago.
