It does not matter whether you are pro/con Octel, David. You make some interesting points although these are the identical obstacles all VM companies are facing. I do think that your evaluation from a business perspective is wrong. You have not identified the correct market for Octel's growth. You're not even close on this. You have even just compared Octel to a truly dead company--Apple. Every positive point that is brought up concerning Octel does not receive equal consideration from you as compared to these references of Octel as this slow witted dinosaur with inferior technology that can't tie its own shoe laces. That is how some of these comments come off--it's your opinion, of course.

Here is a quick business lesson on market share and proprietary technology:

1) Your goal is to see that everyone is using your technology.

2) If you can't get everyone, get most of them.

3) Industry standards can be a huge downer for profit margins. Until you see the whites of their eyes, try to attain rule number one.

4) Not all market share is the same. There is a real difference between the U.S. market as compared to the European as compared to the Asian as compared to the South American. Sales strategies and goals may be different although the bottom line is always exactly that.

5) The level of technology needed between these different markets has historically been shown to be differentiated in time. This is a no brainer.

Sorry, David, but this company is not in any trouble. It is strongly positioned compared to other VM providers. You also have a rather strange view that Octel is a static company with little emphasis on future market needs (technology). If you take a real close look at the chronology of major advancements in this sector over the last ten years it is impossible to escape the fact that Octel has been a real contributor.

Individuals who are either affiliated with or have had some relationship with a company's competitors invariably have only negative things to say: "Who really cares?" "So what?" "It will have no impact." "Upstarts are going to rule the world."

You may be right that some small company is going to bury Octel along with many of the other VM companies. It may happen, but not today or even not within five years. Octel (along with other companies) has more than enough horse power to put up a real good fight. And if some upstart really does have the "holy grail" it's not impossible for Octel to be the big brother who buys it. How does that one taste?

Be negative for any reason you like, but balance things with some objectivity. Octel probably has a greater understanding about their sector's direction than you or me. Octel probably understands everyones technology better than you or me. Octel probably is working on things that you or I have no clue about. Octel probably has much more that is positive going for it than negative.
