Actually Jim, The user would care less about technology jumps, than able to do their tasks faster and more efficiently. The x86 instruction set has been the same till the MMX.

If you look at the performance of the respective systems you will find that there is increasing constant linear relationship between each generation of the x86 family. (Notice I said system not processor). This extends to the pentiumII

Of course there is marketing. How much resources do you think Intel, combined with all of the major vendors are expending to make the pentium II a success. Do you think that the major vendors want to push low margin low end systems, which won't make them any money?

Like I said some people are doomed to ignorance. Or maybe you are funny albert's twin?
