I think there are several interrelated key questions, none of which has been answered so far.

1. Was the unnamed witness who claimed to have seen Suzanne on College Street at about 9:30 telling the truth? That is: she may have been reporting what she later came to believe she saw, but did she really see it? Her detailed descriptions of the men in front of and behind Suzanne strike me as being highly suspicious. Nobody remembers that stuff.

2. If the unnamed witness actually did see Suzanne in College Street, why had S left the campus? Where was she going?

3. In that case, did Suzanne have a prior appointment with someone? She told Peter Stein that she was tired and just wanted to sleep. She'd left her wallet at home. She'd already eaten dinner at the pizza party. I see no reason why she'd have left campus impulsively.

4. Obviously: if she had an appointment, when was it made, and with whom? Before she left for the pizza party, or during the half hour or so she was in her apartment before setting off to return the keys?

5. If she was in fact NOT seen in College Street by the unnamed witness, then it's logical to assume that she returned home by the quickest route after dropping off the keys: by walking back across campus. If that's what she did, then she was accosted en route, perhaps by someone she knew, or was met outside her apartment.

Still no answer to this, Jeff: you said that one needs Yale ID to pass throught the various campus gates. But you also said that Phelps Gate closes only after 11:00 p.m. Does this mean that anyone could get on campus until that time?
