This is a major problem.
I agree that the information is what really drives purchase decisions, and that the places where you CAN buy goods often don't give you enough information - but rather push the brand they have the best deal with (how different is that from any retailer?).
Manufacturers are afraid to alienate their distributors at this point, because they fear that the web still isn't real. In fact, we are finding that the "clicks and mortar" cliche approach is very good and far more useful.
I like B&N.com because while they use junk MSFT in their architecture, their possibilities are ENHANCED by their store locations. I can see a day where I order a book, and (if I need it quickly) I pick it up 15 minutes later. Or, I'm in the store and can't find the book, order it, and pick it up at the desk.
There are huge benefits to this model.
