With Brown & Co, there is only one rule: the amount of stock sold in a single day may not exceed the account's equity at the day's open. There is no penalty for holding a position overnight.

I believe the text of NYSE Rule 431 is not available on-line. Your best bet is to call your broker's margin desk and inquire about their interpretation of Rule 431.
