I looked into getting DSL before going with the cable modem for the very reasons you cited. Unfortunately, I'm 12,7000 feet from the Central Office that's on the very fringe of acceptability.

So, I had a choice...stick with the dial-up line, or go with a cable modem. I'm not concerned with the ability of the entire segment to be able to view my data. I don't do anything interesting. For work-related information, I'll be installing an IPsec VPN client. If I start getting paranoid, I'll download PGP and use that for e-mail encryption.

The latest version of the relevant DOCSIS standards spec in good encryption between the modem (cable or DSL) and the broadband service node. That will at least protect you from your neighbors' "sniffing." It'll be quite awhile before we see it deployed though.

Thus far, the bandwidth has been great. No complaints there at all.
