Health Outcomes Management enters the application service provider arena with the release of its Critical Care Table product.
Minneapolis, MN, Feb 7, 2000. /PRNewswire/ -- Health Outcomes Management, Inc. (BB:HOMI - news) announced today it released Critical Care Tables (CCT), its first clinical tool that will be delivered to practitioners via the internet. The product can be accessed in the clinical toolkit section of the company?s website at www.homi.com.
The CCT product produces infusion rate sheets quickly and easily. Infusion rate sheets are a set of calculations that help critical care nurses and hospital pharmacists calculate the proper pump setting for intravenous drug therapies. Multiple personnel typically do these calculations manually until a consensus rate is reached. These calculations must be redone when the patient?s condition changes or the physician changes the patient?s prescribed therapy. These calculations are often redone several times on a daily basis for each patient in the ward. Each time a calculation is done the possibility for error is introduced.
Examples of drugs that are commonly administered intravenously are Pharmica-Upjohn?s (PNU) Heperin, Abbot Laboratories (ABT) Dopamine, Ciba?s (CIBN) Terbutaline, Roche?s (RHO) Versed, Warner-Lambert?s (WLA) Epinephrine , and Eli Lilly?s (LLY) Dobutrex.
There are approximately 6,200 hospitals in the United States alone, most of them having critical care wards. More than 100,000 hospitalized patients die from adverse drug reactions each year (JAMA 1998). Dosing errors make up a meaningful proportion of these reactions. It is anticipated by the Company that any product that can help to reduce error rates and the associated liability in this area, will be warmly received by nurses, pharmacists and administrators. The success of this product will be to some extent driven by pharmacist and nurse access to the Internet, both in the pharmacy and on the critical care ward.
Health Outcomes feels that the ASP or application service provider method of distribution, whereby the application is hosted by the company and the customer accesses the application via the Internet, is the optimal method of distribution for this very niche oriented product. Customers will pay for this product on an annual, monthly, or per use basis. Several of the Health Outcomes? other products also fit this description and are in development for ASP implementations.
