I've tried to figure this one out too. Your benefits will be less if you stop contributing than they would be if you continued, but the difference may not be too severe. Here is a link to a web site where you can download a program that estimates your benefits for any scenario you want to put in. It's been a long time since I used it, and it's not the most user friendly thing you will ever see, but it will help.

You can also get the SSA to do the calculation for you. Here's a link containing a link to a secure site where you can enter a request to the SSA (I gave you the non-secure link in case your browser isn't ready for the secure site). You get to enter your own estimate for future earnings.

I just tried it and it would not accept my info, but that's probably because I recently moved and they don't have my updated info. It gave me a form to print out to send in.
