Stitch & Z -

The Seattle Times article implies that these new types of set top boxes with technology introduced by Tivo and Replay last year will have disk drives. However, I have no confidence that the Seattle Times reporter got it right.

The article is about Video On Demand (VOD) and interactive channels. It mentions set top boxes such as the Explorer 2000 that is being installed in 8,000 homes a day and the Motorola DCT 5000+ that will be introduced this summer. It quotes the cost of these boxes as $300 to $400 but says the prices will be dropping fast (sounds like disk drives).

A graph accompanies the article with the heading "Worldwide digital set top box production forecast". The graph is labeled as from Dataquest. If the 28M unit figure seems high it is likely a graph used in the wrong context.

Regards,
Mark
