Dodging an 800-Pound Gorilla
Novell (NOVL) said it will convene a press conference in San Jose Tuesday to explain how it will avoid competing with Microsoft (MSFT) as the software giant rolls out Windows 2000. Microsoft's new operating system is set for a formal release on Feb. 17 and offers some of the same functions as Novell's bread-and-butter directory and networking programs. Novell is expected to elaborate on plans to sell software suites that help users administer, secure, navigate and collaborate on their networks.

Gateswatch: Bill Gates' personal wealth grew an infinitesimally small $49 million Tuesday as Microsoft stock rose one-sixteenth of a point. The company's stock was stable as Linux plays and Novell's Microsoft-avoidance tactics kept the market's attention. Gates' net worth, based on Microsoft holdings, was $83.9 billion as of Monday's close.
