Voice technology stock up after demonstration
SAN FRANCISCO, , Feb 7 (Reuters) - The stock of Belgian speech technology company Lernout & Hauspie Speech Products NV (NasdaqNM:LHSP - news) soared Monday after it demonstrated new products, including a Linux-based hand-held device that uses voice commands for Internet applications.

Lernout stock jumped 18-9/16 to close at 79-3/16.

At the Demo 2000 technology conference in Indian Wells, Calif., L&H showed a prototype hand-held device that has a large vocabulary continuous speech dictation engine for sending and receiving e-mail, surfing the Web and conduct e-commerce transactions. It showed how its technology can be used for other wireless or hand-held devices.

L&H demonstrated how its technology lets hand-held devices communicate with Linux computer servers equipped with its ''large vocabulary speech recognition engine.''

Stocks of companies that use the open source software known as Linux have been strong performers in the stock market in recent months. Linux open source software is developed as a collaborative effort by programmers around the world and is available at no charge over the Internet.

L&H expects its voice-recognition applications to gain momentum when a mobile workforce begins to use voice-activated programs running on hand-held devices.

''Most users employ hand-held and mobile devices on the go, often requiring hands free' use,'' Gaston Bastiaens, president and CEO of L&H.

The L&H system lets users communicate with machines in, ''a simple, natural, hands-free manner,'' he added.

In addition to the hand-held devices for speech recognition, L&H demonstrated its CyberGenie CG 2400, a multi-line, multi-user, expandable PC Cordless Phone System that lets users query a database by voice.

The L&H offerings have been designed to fill the growing need for a simplified input and output mechanism for the Internet device market, the company said.

''The small size and portability of PDAs, hand-held and mobile devices has made them tremendously popular and at the same time has provided a huge opportunity for the speech industry,'' said Bastiaens.
