Another angle on the COO reorganization

This could also be an attempt by Novell to streamline what key executives are already doing.

Schmidt is very much the articulator of Novell's strategy and vision to the public and to the outside world. He has the greatest connections within the industry, makes the best case for Novell's technology to other CEO's and opinion makers and large customers, and has his eye on the internet and innovation with internet space. This is an outward focus that brings into Novell the best of what is happening in internet space and at the same time makes everyone aware of what Novell has to offer in internet space.

Nelson will focus on the internals of Novell's operations. Getting the company to focus on its mission.

In some ways if this is the model then this reorg puts an end to any further retreats into fortress Novell. When you have your CEO externally focused then it really isn't possible to do what was done after MSFT intruded on NOS space back in the early to mid 90's. Novell tried to hold onto its existing customers in those days and missed the internet launch. In contrast with Schmidt out there with the internet start-ups and with the mission of getting Novell's newest technologies into the marketplace, you have an outwardly focused company. Schmidt isn't going to miss anything that is happening and Novell is getting ready to move its directory technology into the core of the internet.

I expect this reorg will produce much more innovation and a much quicker response by Novell to the marketplace. Schmidt is being freed up from the day to day details and is focusing on the partnerships and technologies that will make Novell even more successful.
