Nokia extends mobile phone market lead -- WSJ
NEW YORK, Feb 8 (Reuters) - Nokia Corp. (NYSE:NOK - news) widened its lead as the world's No. mobile phone maker, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.
The Finnish phone maker took 26.9 percent of the mobile phone market in 1999, up from 22.5 percent in 1998, according to a report from Dataquest Inc., the newspaper said.
Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT - news), of Schaumburg, Ill. and Telefon AB L.M. Ericsson , of Sweden lost market share, while South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. gained share, the newspaper said.
Phone makers are bracing themselves for the next round of the wireless competition, as consumers await the introduction of more powerful models that can retrieve data and content form the Web, the newspaper said.
The biggest growth last year came in Latin America, where sales doubled.
In Europe, sales grew 70 percent
North America saw a 60 percent growth
and Asia saw a 50 percent growth, the newspaper said. |
