I think he's just one of an Entire Generation of Degenerates...
[successful individuals, often times...but still essentially in rebellion...see Jan Wenner - he's my benchmark, along with Lorne Micheals, Capola, King, etc..(names are not readily on my mind)-]
The Rolling Stone [De]Generation was created by the Viet Nam War.
Desensitized and disillusioned, we've witnessed the disintegration of our moral fabric while in the death throws of a massmedia drug induced nihilistic frenzy...The Early Sixties, the Seventies, Eighties and Nineties have all had a "drug of choice"**, which was/is promoted by the media/cinema...
The early 60's saw The Valley of the Dolls, promoting Vallium, et al, to sooth The Miserable 'housewife' and help Her accept the/Her societal...[im]position.
The late 60's was about the promotion of LSD, and The Beatles long-hair phase, 'Happiness is a Warm Gun'... Revolver ...'Popculture Marketing' was emerging with the RollingStoneMagazine Era.
The Seventies were the Drug Cornicopia years...anything and everything that could be ingested, injected, smoked or toked was available at the Finest Universities all across America. By the mid to late 70's, it was clear that the Anti-establishment was getting Established, and they brought the idea of "mind-alteration as Enlightenment" along with them...it was Cool to do drugs 'recreationally', with discretion ...especially if you were a Graduate Student.
The Eighties...What motivated the discipline needed to surpass your parents in terms of socioeconomics...?
One word.
Cocaine.
Bonzo.... The Times were High...Supply Side Economics, The Day After and the Soaring Defense Budget. Conspicuous Consumption and Covert Operations...The CIA. The Truth...? The Big Lie. Pink Flamingoes and MiamiVice...the so called 'war on drugs', and "The End of the Innocence".
We redefined the meaning of 'dignity' and 'decorum' in The Big Eighties.
The Nineties came and went like a long weekend... The Hippy "Anti-Establishment" had succeeded in Establishing it's Empire... "If we build it with a regurgitation of 'flowerchild' popculture, they will have no choice but to come..." A Marketing Story...the Youth were herded into their stockade...happily shooting Heroine, experimenting with hallucinogenic 'designer drugs' with confidence and Conviction, and most importantly...spending lots of their BoomerParent$ Denero...! Piercings, tatoos, 'thrift store' clothing, CD's, TV's and PC's.
The care and feeding of 'Consumers'...
I guess what I'm saying here is...we can't blame the Fragmentation of our Society on this particular President...he's a Product of the Era we all share...he's just like us...in many ways.
What a Long, Strange Tripp it's been~
**I consider sex and violence to be 'drugs of choice', too. |
