Well - Cobe beat me to it, but the bottom line is you biult a shorted battery. The silver tarnish is an oxidized form of the metal, and in contact with the aluminum (a more electronegative metal by far) the aluminum will preferentially corrode, dumping its electrons into the silver. The beauty of this process is that the tarnish is not rubbed off, but literally restored to metallic silver.
