WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--Kyocera Corp. (KYO) has antitrust approval for its purchase of Qualcomm Inc.'s (QCOM) terrestrial-based Code Division Multiple Access, or CDMA, wireless consumer phone business.

Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

Kyocera was granted early termination of the waiting period under the Hart- Scott-Rodino Act, according to the Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday.

The transaction is expected to close by the end of February.

The CDMA business includes phone inventory, manufacturing equipment and customer commitments, as reported. Under the agreement,

Kyocera will purchase a majority of its CDMA chipsets and system software from Qualcomm for five years and continue its existing royalty-bearing CDMA license agreement with Qualcomm.

Kyocera is expected to produce 16 million wireless handsets in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2001. The figure is double its cumulative shipments to date.

As reported, Qualcomm expects to take additional charges of $50 million in the second quarter of fiscal 2000 in connection with the sale of the wireless operations. The company recorded a charge of $27 million in its first quarter related to the sale.

Kyocera Corp. is a Japanese-based manufacturing company.

Qualcomm Inc. develops and delivers digital wireless communications systems and Internet products.
