Motorola and Telsim Sign $1.5 Billion GSM Deal - First GPRS Trials in Turkey
CANNES, France--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 3, 2000--Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) and Turkish GSM operator Telsim have today announced the signing of a contract worth $1.5 billion to provide infrastructure, handsets and associated services in order to expand the countrywide global system for mobile (GSM) communications network. Motorola also will implement a full trial overlay general packet radio service (GPRS) core mobile data network.

This GPRS announcement seem a little odd given this earlier PR from ERICY:

STOCKHOLM -- Swedish telecoms group LM Ericsson AB (ERICY) has received an order for mobile infrastructure from Turkey's largest mobile telecommunications operator Turkcell, Ericsson said Tuesday.

With this new agreement Turkcell will be able to purchase several of Ericsson's latest GSM innovations, like its open GPRS system, GSM on the Net, and its GSM Pro.
