As mentioned in another thread, asking for your shares will not prevent a market maker from shorting your stock. They essentially print their own shares and hope they don't get called on it before they have to cover. Sounds like a lot of the short interest may be due to some MMs as well as selling due to the earnings report/CC. When shorts smell blood they really pile in.

I heard this story on CNBC that was pretty sad. One of the mutual funds had been hit hard since the beg of this year. Several of their major holdings tanked. CNBC commented that shorts had then target all the rest of the holdings in that mutual fund thereby adding fuel to the fire. When that mutual fund crashes and they have to cover all the loses, the shorts win because they will be selling the other stocks as well. Just makes you appreciate Wall Street all the more :) Very much like the velociraptors in Jurrasic Park. They surround you and once they smell weakness they attack quickly, piling on as you go down.
