Basic CREE Questions

I haven't researched CREE. But since I'm being asked to help out in the discussion about whether or not one of their products has crossed the chasm, I'm gonna ask that you folks spend a minimum amount of time bringing me up to speed about some very significant issues so I don't have to do the research myself. Fair 'nuff? Besides, from the posts I'm seeing I have a hunch answers to these questions will be hugely beneficial for those other than me.

1) CREE's most important proprietary architecture is the technolgy that provides the ability to grow SiC in mass quantities in high quality. Right?

2) Assuming I'm right about #1, take a look at the manual's Figure 3.2 showing the Layers of Technology (page 69 of TRFM.) Which layer best describes the technology which grows SiC? As I study that graphic, I realize that I really don't have a clue.

(This relates to my post from a day or two ago when I mentioned CREE's technology being only two layers up from electricity; I'm questioning my thinking about it.)

3) Does CREE have a second proprietary architecture that allows them to make LED chips, or is that aspect of their business a non-proprietary architecture participating in a royalty game?

4) Regarding #3, I assume I'm right when I believe that the layer of technology is the semiconductor layer. Right?

Looking forward to brief answers clarifying those fundamentally basic issues for this carpetologist. Thanks in advance.
