Rs 1,000 crore ($222.00 mil) IT backbone project okayed

MUMBAI, FEBRUARY 8: The Cabinet has cleared a Rs 1,000 crore project for the upgradation of the countrywide fibre optic cable network from 10 Gbps to 100 Gbps, member Telecom Regulatory Authority Commission, N Seshagiri, said at a seminar on Tuesday. The project will be completed in a year's time, he added.
Using technology, network capacity could be enhanced 100 times at 10 times the cost at which the earlier network was established, he said. Cable operators could provide the last mile connection for Internet access. The operators would have to revamp their network to offer Internet access on TVs, he added.
N Parmeswaran, DoT deputy director general, said the Government had given in-principle clearance to eight ISPs for setting up their own gateways. They include Software Technology Parks of India, Sigma Input-Output Technology, Dishnet and Jain Studios. Two more applications are pending clearance, he revealed.
Sigma Input-Output has obtained clearance for setting up gateways in Delhi, Bangalore,Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad. Dishnet has obtained clearance for setting up a gateway at Chennai and Jain Studios at Noida. The companies have been asked to submit their letter of acceptance within a week, Parmeswaran said.
