AT&T's Wireless Makes Great Strides

AT&T takes great issue with Walter S. Mossberg's Jan. 13 Personal
Technology column criticizing our wireless service. While Mr. Mossberg is
entitled to his opinion, his experience is six months' old and not typical of the
high-quality service AT&T provides to millions of wireless customers today.

While there have been some bumps in the road over the past year, AT&T
invested more than $2 billion in its wireless network in 1999 to meet the
demand for its services. And the investment paid off for customers. In
September 1999, AT&T Wireless Services was honored with the J.D.
Power & Associates award for highest overall satisfaction among wireless
users in nine out of 13 major cities surveyed, including Washington D.C.,
where Mr. Mossberg is located. It is worth noting that call quality is the most
heavily weighted attribute determining overall customer satisfaction. And this
month's issue of PC Computing rated AT&T's wireless network as the bests
wireless network in the United States.

Mr. Mossberg's column also suggests CDMA digital technology is more
pervasive than AT&T's TDMA digital standard. Putting all the CDMA hype
aside, TDMA is the most widely used digital technology in North America,
and our services make TDMA digital service available at both the cellular
and PCS frequencies, which the competing service Mr. Mossberg describes
does not.

We believe every customer is valuable and hope we will have an opportunity
to re-earn Mr. Mossberg's business in the near future.
