Jules and ALL...Article...Internet in asia to grow 10 FOLD!

Asian Internet Users to Grow 10-fold in Five Years

Asia already has an estimated 5-10 million Internet users today, a figure that is expected to grow 10-fold to 100 million within five years, according to Doug Kaplan, vice president of Nikkei BizTech Inc.

Kaplan made his comments at the "Wired Into Asia" conference held February 20 in San Jose, California. Presented by Nikkei BP Biztech, Inc., the seminar attracted 300 exectives from Asian and U.S. hardware, software and service companies interested in capitalizing on Internet business opportunities in Asia.

"If you see 100 million users and the market is doubling every year, it is a good market opportunity," Kaplan said at the "Wired Into Asia" conference held February 20 in San Jose, California.

In a breakdown by country, Kaplan said :

- Japan has the largest number of Internet Service Providers (ISP): it has 1,400 of the total 2,000 ISPs in Asia. The ranks of Asian ISPs are to rise to 3,500 within the next five years. Japan had 1.5 million Internet users in 1996, and that is expected to swell to 2.2 million this year. Australia had 2 million users last year, to rise to 3 million in 1997 among the country's 340 ISPs.

- China had a modest 200,000 users in 1996 and only 30 ISPs, but the user ranks are expected to rise to 400,000 in 1997. China established its first Internet link in 1993 and allowed access by the general public in 1995.

- Hong Kong had 200,000 users in 1996 as well, a figure to double in 1997, but it also has a very high number of ISPs -- 90.

- India had only 30,000 users in 1996, but that should more than triple to 100,000 this year. The country has only two ISPs.

- Indonesia had 50,000 users in 1996, to double in 1997, and 20 ISPs last year, also expected to double in 1997.

- South Korea had 800,000 users in 1996, to grow to 1.5 million this year, and 16 ISPs.

- Malaysia had 200,000 users in 1996, to rise to 300,000 this year, and two ISPs.

- The Philippines had 20,000 users last year, to grow to 30,000 in 1997. ISP growth has been dramatic: the country went from four to 80 ISPs in the past two years.

- Singapore had 100,000 users in 1996 and expects 150,000 in 1997. It has three ISPs.

- Taiwan had 150,000 users last year, to rise to 250,000 this year. It has 60 ISPs.

- Thailand had 100,000 users in 1996, to rise to 150,000 in 1997. It has 16 ISPs.

- Vietnam, which currently has no direct Internet links, had 4,000 Internet users, to double in 1997. The country currently is establishing two Internet gateways, one in Hanoi and one in Ho Chi Minh City.

I believe these numbers are very conservative.

Is it any wonder Intel's chips are selling so well in the Asia's?
