Article re 10-gig ethernet and SAN from Network World Fusion:

---------------------------------------------
10 Gigabit Ethernet touted by vendor alliance

I've got great news for those that love Ethernet, bad news for those fond of ATM, and awful news perhaps for those that advocate storage-area networks (SAN).

It seems that 10 gigabit Ethernet is one step closer to reality -- at least based on a shindig thrown this week by its creators. The 10 Gigabit Ethernet Alliance yesterday gave a sort of status report and pep rally for the technology.

Ethernet this fast has to give ATM vendors shivers, as it will be a far stronger candidate for MAN and WAN service.

And while the technology is still a few years away, I've got to wonder what it means for SANs. Storage vendors are all over customers trying to get them to build separate networks, based on fiber channel, for storage. All of which is at a time when everything else -- voice, video and data -- is converging. When nets gain ten times the bandwidth, will they be able to add storage to the newly converged mix?
